Small Web Business Questions and AnswersSmall web based business here. Need a easy flash program to make better site. Help please, can't afford muchQ) Small web based business here. Need a easy flash program to make better site. Help please, can't afford much
Hi all, thanks for viewing. I'm really trying here to make something of our lives. Started up Dress4it.com 3 yrs ago and we are still struggling. I want to update the site and make it "flash-y", I tried coffeecup flash firestarter and it was great & easy to use, but I only had the freeware version. With a horrid coffeecup logo on everything I did, has anyone got the code or purchase reference number that makes it a proper copy or even a better program - There's a free girls dress in it for you if you can help me.
Thaks in advance guys

A) what on earth do you need to make flashy? your site looks as though it simply needs a revamp to look sophisticated and classy...
you need to whip that menu from the bottom of the page to the top - no one can even see you have online brochure! they have to scroll to the bottom of the page first!
too much going on and too much the same colour.
and please, the transition effect? mid ninties!small business web site?Q) just creted this web site would like to know does it look ok, can any one suggust any improvments i can make,
www.driveways.ie
A) The site looks very nice, but the content really needs work. I always advise my clients to hire a professional copywriter. It really isn't that expensive (you can probably get your site done for $50 to $100) using a company like WritersByDesign.com or hiring someone on Elance.com.how to start a small web design business??Q) off-course, you will need software, that will cost around £500 for second hand ones..
your house/flat/room will be the tiny office, so that u don't pay an extra amount for rent..
but..
how to approach clients??
is it possible to buy a printer, print leaflets, hire someone to distribute them?
is it worth it to pay for web adverts???
any other ways for approaching clients??
and... how to charge them?? on what basis??
are there any other sources of funding apart from your own or partners money??
A) I have been working as a freelance web designer for a couple of years and have gotten all of my work through word-of-mouth and no advertising at all. I've been so busy I haven't even had a chance to get my own website built!
I wouldn't bother with web-advertising as there are so many web design companies out there, (unless you spend a lot of money) you ad will just be a drop in the ocean. If you do a good job, most customers will recommend you to other people.
Make it part of your standard service agreement that you reserve the right to include a small link to your site or email address at the bottom of each page of any site you build (but don't make it any more than 20px tall).
As for pricing, some people have a standard tariff (blah, blah pounds per page). But I tend to set myself an hourly wage and estimate how many hours the entire project will take me and base the price on that.
Another tip: Make sure your explicit about what the quoted price will include (maintenance, search engine submissions (which are pretty useless), etc) otherwise you could be working on the site for the rest of your life with no pay!how to build a web site...cheaply for new small business...would need to add phots's...?A) Here's a neat FREE site you can post anything except porn. You can add Pay Pal etc. / photos / fancy text etc.
They have lots of examples to help you and have lots of sample sites to look at. Although some are sorta like My Space etc, you can make a professionial site if you wish.
You can check my first try at it at: www.cmpapy.piczo.com
The site is: www.piczo.com (sign up free and there is never a cost.)
Your site URL would be: Your Name.Piczo.comHow to Start a low cost web site for a one man small business?Q) i work from home and need a cheap lowcost web site

Is it legal to start a from home web-based small business?Q) Is it ok for minors to start a small web-based business selling some handmade product online??
(if you only made a little bit of money?)
A) It's legal, but keep in mind that you will need to keep track of how much money you make and how much you spend in supplies, shipping, advertising and other business expenses. If you make more than a certain amount of money (I think it is $3000) you will have to file income taxes (even as a minor), and you will need records of all those things. Certain supplies that are essential to your business will be tax deductible, so make sure you keep track of them.
And don't forget, if you are selling through ebay or etsy or another commercial site, there will be fees to keep track of as well.
I don't want to discourage you, but be prepared. If you know what to expect, you will be more likely to continue your business rather than be overwhelmed. Also, don't be afraid to ask your parents for help. Most parents would be thrilled to have their child start up even a small business because it is such a good experience. Is Yahoo Small Business web hosting supports aspx based web page ?Q) I am a member of small business service. A) Does Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting support ASP.NET2.0 Web Pages?Q) I am a web developer working on a project in which my client has an existing web hosting service through Yahoo Small Business. However, it appears that this web hosting service does not recognize files with an aspx extension. It may be a publishing or configuration problem, but it appears that yahoo doesn't support ASP.NET2.0. Which is outrageous, considering it (along with AJAX) are the emerging standards in web design... Thanks for any input that saves me from actually calling yahoo and remaining on hold for half a day just to get a yes or no answer....

A) I'm thinking of starting a small web design business, and tips or ideas?Q) I'm thinking of starting a small web design business.
I was laid off at work and need to do something. I would love to work from home and have to use what I have for hardware and software to start.
I have FrontPage, digital camera, scanner, fast connection, and understand the basics. I have put up a few basic sites but nothing for money to this point.
I have no real design skills, as far as page content and layout. I don't really like the templates in FP but know that what I have done can be a lot better.
Also, any marketing ideas for this type business on a very short shoestring?
I'm going to use the few examples I have, put together some marketing materials, and hit the street.
A few of my thoughts and ideas are to:
since I am small I will focus on small and micro businesses that do not have sites
I am going to focus on target markets - used car lots, auto repair, carpenters, masons, etc. Get a feel for there needs and go one market to next as I use up leads
A) You are entering one of the most competitive fields in Internet services. There are hundreds of thousands of people offering their web design services. If you go to onfocus.com and use the googlesmackdown tool you can see how many web sites are currently offering a web designer (666,000 as I write this). And the number of web sites advertising as a web design business, 34,200. You will absolutely need to develop a very specialized skill set and it would be to your extreme benefit to have many thousands of personal contacts to help spread -- word-of-mouth advertising.
My business contracts with web designers, web developers, and web programmers almost daily. There are very few who actually know how to design a web site that provides customer loyalty, sells a product, provides search engine compliance and marketability, provides Internet directory compliance and marketability, and promotes brand awareness. All of which are absolute musts for an online business.
Hope that helps stimulate your business ideas.I'm thinking of starting a small web design business, and tips or ideas?Q) I'm thinking of starting a small web design business.

Can I add Google Adsense with this plan?Q) I wonder if I can add Google Adsense after I'm done designing my website with Yahoo Small Business Starter Plan, can anyone help me on this please, Thanks!
A) Yes, sure you can. Yahoo does not restrict you in displaying Adsense on your pages even though the ads are from a major competitor.
Feel free to monetize your website in any way you like because as long as you own your domain, you have the ultimate say in who or where to display your ads.How to setup a small business web pages that wont cost much but delivers all good functionality?Q) Hello I would need a update my company webpages. There is need for some database data, online communication to mobile (sending me emails when somebody contact me), and normal style stuff etc.
Where in the Earth this is cheapest, easiest, or most reasoble to do?
Business is waiting Your Kind answers,
2006
1. Company can use web consultants, if
they would provide enough reason to do so.
2. I can do basic administration like db admin in startup phase.
3. Solution should be scalable later on.
thanks folks for answering. I will read Your sites alter on.
4. NO Online Administration on own equipment.
5. Prefer monthly fee based solution / OR transaction based (if any).
6. Would like to participate into network where my consultancy would pay-service with service?
A) If you don't know design or programming, its tough to represent your company in a professional representation. Sure, you could create a site, but your customers will not think you're legit. You get one chance to make a good first impression.
I could probably cut my own hair, but if I want it to look great, I'll let a professional do it.I get an error message when I try to update my small business web site. What could be my problem?Q) I have sent the error report that popped up during my attempt to publish my updates to my smallbusiness web site.
A) Could you possibly have more information than your page allows?
Did you paste some HTML text that perhaps is in conflict with the site builder?
I'd suggest calling your web host company's technical dept, or whoever supplied you with the page builder for advice.
I use GoDaddy, and have called them late in the evening, and gotten excellent service. I don't know who you use, but I'd imagine they have tech support for that kind of thing.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
